SHINJIRO ATAE

He opens up about his activites in AAA and as an actor
Fashion master Shinjiro Atae shares himself with us in this write-up.
This time, he reports about his favorite items as well as his fashion obsession!!

―What is your fashion for this fall weather?
Definitely blacks, beiges, and khaki... Sometimes I will put a little white near areas that are mainly dark. That's my impression of autumn fashion. I think I want to bring outfits together with colors rather than through patterns [for this season].

―So colors are really important.
That's right. Outfit bases will be composed of matching colors. I want my style to be a little different this season.

―Have you liked black garments for a long time?
I love them. I wore a lot of black in summer too. But that doesn't mean I won't wear it for fall (laughs)

―Is there anything you've purchased recently that will be in 'heavy rotation' in your wardrobe?
I often wear sarrouel pants with a black and white border that are different from the ones in this photoshoot. They have a waist gumband. I've been able to wear them when I feel sweaty under a tanktop with a checked pattern. Yes, the two different patterns did match.

―But that's with no other colors except black and white?
Mmhmm, it's simple. However, the pattern-on-pattern-thing was so this summer

―Is that a recent, new trend?
I used a lot of different colors up until summer, but since I think the color black has 'me' written all over it, I thought about it as a base, and now I think I'm going to use it to bring outfits together.

―When did you develop an interest in Western-style clothing?
I wonder? But, I've been called "a stylish-boy" since middle school (laughs). I've been wearing various styles since then, you know. About the time I became a freshman in highschool, I did the B-BOY style and wore street-like clothes. I also wore clothes that were somewhat effeminate, with just pieces like white shirts with jeans.

―So it was a challenge for you, and you struggled to find your own sense of style.
Yes. I was all over the place.

―Right after you debuted, I had the impression that you wore cute clothes.
Yeah, I wore them. Now I can't... I mean, I have since then, but ones that feel more like 'me'. They are cute but also bring out calm feelings. I think those are the kind of 'cute clothes' I choose to wear.

―Although the image of the clothes you wore for today's photoshoot may seem tough, I think your style is more about feeling comfortable.
Today's clothes are like that, huh. Yet I think they do compare to what I normally wear: simple. Usually I include a little more in my outfits. I wore a loose vest over a tanktop even in the summer - it only seems like I put more on (haha). I like including at least that much, but today is a simpler ensemble.

―Is it time-consuming deciding on garments when you do photoshoots for these kinds of magazines?
It takes time (laughs) I think I take the most amount of time (even in AAA). I have to consider the balance of the photos as a whole for the magazine world.

―Now, as for your image, your boots make a tough impression.
I like boots~ I wear nothing but lately (laughs) I went to all of my lives in them

―Certainly, you have them even on stage
Yes. I avoided them in summer - they are sweltering hot, as one would expect from their appearance.
But I want to wear them in the fall.
I always wear my long, tall black boots. I think I want to buy a new pair though because I'm already starting to wonder if I wear the old too often. But I really like them! One time the soles were damaged and after taking them out for repairs, I was still happy with them. I think I want a new pair of long black boots that can compare to those old ones.

―Do you want to wear them from autumn to winter?
Women have many kinds of long boots but men very few. I'm jealous that females have a better selection!

As for AAA, the group is making a new start again as it enters its 6th year

―Speaking of AAA, the 5th anniversary live is over and you've already started facing towards the next phase. What's also in store for you as an actor?
I filmed a movie and now I'm in the 'waiting phase' for it to come out. The work is called "Switch wo Osu Toki," and original work by Yuusuke Yamada. I've read "Real Onigokko" and such, and since he is an author I like, I felt strange appearing in one of his works. Since the work gave me such a unique view on the world, I look forward to completing my own **. For AAA, finishing 5 years was a turning point for us. Entering into our 6th year, I feel like we are ready to come alive with something new, or, how should I put this... I think we're starting again once more from our 6th year on, having a new beginning as we continue to advance through the years.
** I'm not quite sure what he's trying to say here to be honest. Also can't find any information about this movie at all. Only blog entries, nothing official. someone fill me in?

―Finally, please give us some Atae fashion advice for this fall
For myself, I usually hope that I'm not wearing the same thing as someone else **
But if I could say one thing, I think it's okay not to use a lot of colors for autumn. I think it's more stylish to combine simple colors, making a more adult-ish look.
** I think this is what he's saying

LOVE ITEM

[The White-ish Hat]
I bought this about 8 months ago in Harajuku and thought it was really nice. When I saw the price, it was on sale for about 4000yen. What else do to, I thought, but buy it right away. It's like a typical hat from CanCan, I wear it superficially by showing a little hair placed in the front. It's white but a little yellowish so it's easy to use with many things. I used it often in the summer.

[The Black Stole]
I wore this scarf one time for an outfit. I said "I'll buy this" to my stylist and he told me "okay, here you go" and gave it to me... (laughs) Scarves bring up images of autumn and winter, but I wore this during the summertime with a tanktop. Because it's lightweight, I can use it even on some hot summer days so it's one of my most favorite items.

+ ATAE'S ROYAL HOSPITAL +

This Month in our Patient Records
Maho of Okayama prefecture (18yo)

Everyone in class was talking about going to karaoke when we graduate.
I've never been to karaoke because I'm not very good at singing.
What should I do so that I'll fit in with everyone?

●'Even if I go, is it okay not to sing?'
When your friends are singing, you may liven up the song with a tambourine or something. I surround myself with those kind of people as well. If there comes a time when you must sing no matter what, how about singing an anime song? If you sing a famous one that everyone knows, everyone can sing together and feel excited. No one will care if your singing is good or bad in that situation. On the contrary, I think it's cuter when people try their best and sing even if they aren't very good.
("Doctor, do you go to karaoke too?" asks the assistant)
I go about once a month. I do other things such as dine out with my friends then too. Any songs I must sing? Hmm what do I do...
I do Hideaki Tokunaga's cover of "Koi ni Ochite" (original by Akiko Kobayashi). I also sing Hikaru Utada's "Automatic" and "First Love" and Yo Hitoto's "Hanamizuki" in a lower key. My friends tell me to sing AAA songs, but I absolutely will not! Because it's embarassing! (laughs) For the girls who will sing AAA, "Get Chu!", "MUSIC!!!" and other uptempo cheerful songs are good!

●("Will you teach any tricks for singing well to Maho-san?" asks the assistant)
Noo~... 'Cuz I'm not special or that good (bitter smile) Although this isn't a trick, I try not to compare myself to others around me too often. Since each person possesses a different voice, I try to sing just aware of the fact that others are listening to me rather than thinking I'm good or bad. That's what makes karaoke fun in the first place, isn't it? Anyway, it's more important to feel like you're having fun than it is to try singing well. And besides, doesn't it make you feel more relaxed if your friends and people around you are surprisingly just as bad? You'll think "I'm not the only one!" (laughs)
With that said, Maho-san, I think I need to show you this prescription: Go enjoy yourself and don't be shy!
